Rick and Sarah Love wanted a sturdy locally made fiberglassic, so they selected & bought a rare 1957 Skagit 17 Convertible.
Rick managed the cosmetic restoration of his Skaj by scheduling painter John Norris of Whidbey Island to shoot her in red 'n white Sterling LPU with Rick doing all the prep work.
When it came time to select an outboard, he wanted an older somewhat period-correct motor but not the smoke. So he selected a 1968 Fisher Pierce Bearcat 55hp 4 stroke outboard.
We mounted the Bearcat 55 on April 10th, and seatrials are not far off. She fires right up and settles into a smooth quiet idle. Restarts are instant.
There will likely be some color-matching of the Bearcat to come, but looking at the pics you can see he's done one fine job so far.
First pic, notice the factory Homelite 55 tachometer on starboard, factory Homelite speedometer on port.
Rick running the Bearcat 55, notice the pleats and piping in the seats which are to look like a 57 Chevy
Another shot of the nice dash Rick fabricated, notice that the engine is running at 1800rpm on the factory Homelite 55 tachometer
Rick and Bill pause for a shot with Bearcat 55hp idling away. Notice all the smoke....that's not there!
Rick smiling after showing him how to start her from cold and hot
Rick smiling right before we rigged the cable over pulley steering
Notice Bearcat 55 Safety Mate controls, single lever for shift and throttle (NOT separate lever), fast idle lever, push for choke, warning light for low oil pressure or overheat, and warning horn for start in gear protection, low oil pressure and overheat while lever is in throttle range. All this functionality was in the first Homelite Safety-Mate controls introduced in 1961, they had it right from the beginning......
